Summer LAW CLERK |
| THE
PROGRAM |
The Delaware Department of Justice Summer Law Clerk Program offers law school students the opportunity to work with deputy attorneys general in almost every area of law in a professional and collegial environment. The Attorney General has jurisdiction over all criminal prosecutions within Delaware and the Criminal Division prosecutes most misdemeanor and all felony crimes. The Civil Division represents State agencies, commissions and boards in State and Federal Courts in nearly every area of civil practice. The Family Division oversees all aspects of civil and criminal law involving Delaware’s families and children. The Fraud and Consumer Protection Division investigates and prosecutes Medicaid fraud, consumer fraud and securities fraud.
Law clerks may receive work from each of the four Department of Justice Divisions. Clerks may write memos, conduct research, prepare briefs and assist Deputy Attorneys in hearings and trials. 2Ls who have completed four full semesters of law school and are certified by their Dean will be sworn in before the Delaware Supreme Court under a limited admission rule and will have the opportunity to try misdemeanor cases. Students are also encouraged to explore their interest in litigation by attending court sessions and other legal proceedings.
To the extent possible, clerks are fully integrated into the work of the Department of Justice and thereby gain a realistic view of the rewards and demands of public service. Upon graduation from law school, former summer clerks are given preference in our hiring process. Many of our current deputies began their relationship with the Department as summer law clerks.
