Attorney General Brady Warns Consumers about  “Do Not Call” list Scam

(Wilmington, DE): Attorney General M. Jane Brady would like to warn Delaware consumers about a scam associated with the federal “Do Not Call” list registration that went into effect last month. There have been reports both nationally and in Delaware of scam artists calling residents to "verify" registration and requesting a fee from the resident claiming that it is required in order to be added to the list. State Representative Melanie George reported this scam to the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit based on a constituent complaint. Rep. George’s constituent had received a call requesting a fee of $298 to complete her “Do Not Call” registration. Since the constituent had not registered with the “Do Not Call” list, she recognized the call to be a scam.

Attorney General Brady stated, "Registration for the federal ‘Do Not Call’ list is absolutely free. Do not agree to pay any fee to register for this free service provided by the Federal Trade Commission." She also urged any Delaware residents, who have received a call requesting a fee to register for the “Do Not Call” list, to contact her Consumer Protection Unit at 800-220-5424.
